VT Woodworkers to Craft Official Furniture from Old State House Elm
Montpelier, Vt.- Governor Jim Douglas and his administration have partnered
with Vermont WoodNet, a non-profit organization of small-scale woodworkers,
in an effort to design and build a set of handcrafted wood conference tables
and a new gubernatorial podium for the Governor's conference room in the
Pavilion Building.
Thirty members of Vermont WoodNet will be involved in transforming the wood
from a 146-year old historic elm removed from the State House lawn last year
and Forest Stewardship Council-certified ash from Shelburne Farms into high
quality, Vermont-made furniture pieces.
An inlay of the state will be carved into the table and the hand turned
podium will feature the state seal.
Most of the processing of the table is complete and the group plans to
present the table to the Governor in June.
Vermont WoodNet is incorporated in Vermont as a non-profit and includes 100
small-scale woodworkers and wood-related businesses in activities that
strengthen the Vermont wood products sector based on a commitment to the
sustainability of the forest resource.
The network of artisans is hosting a campaign to raise pledges to support
the material and labor costs of the 2-year project. Contributions will
result in an organization or businesses' name to be engraved on the plaque
presented at delivery and mounted in the Pavilion, WoodNet membership for
one year, and other perks. Contributions are tax-deductible.
