The Changing of the Guard: WoodNet's Evolving Leadership

Vermont WoodNet has been guiding by a volunteer woodworker-dominated Steering Committee for over a year. As we transition from fall to winter, three Steering Committee members will move on to participate more in WoodNet projects and three new members will take their place. Thanks to the following for their service and welcome new members. We look forward to an exciting year ahead!

ALUMNI
James Burde, of Teiki-Techture in Jericho, brought a "designers eye" to the table and offered insight into how to include the various businesses along the chain, from designers to sawmill operations. James will continue to participate in the Governor's Table project

Stephen Taylor, of Vermont Heritage Wood in Lincoln, contribruted significantly by hosting Vermont WoodNet's Sustainable Woods Workshop at his property. Stephen will continue to be involved in follow up activities from that event.

Gary Svetlik, of Svetlik Designs in Williston, hosted one of our first shop tours and has helped us think through creative web design and fundraising ideas for a coordinator.

NEW GUARD

Barry Genzlinger is owner and operator of Chiroptera Cabin Company, which makes bat houses. Chiroptera means 'winged hand' and represents the order of animals of bats. Not only does Barry build the largest variety of bat houses, he has also built the largest bat house in Vermont, which stands on
the lawn of the Shelburne Museum.

Randall S. Ouellette hosted the June WoodNet meeting at his shop, R & K Woodworking, and is well known to Vermont WoodNet members by his slogan "I'll make one to a million of any piece." As a custom parts maker Randall depends on networking with others small woodworking shops and brings this experience to the Steering Committee to help grow WoodNet.

Parker Nichols runs Green Mountain Wildwoods which deals exclusively with the harvesting and processing of disease killed, forest salvaged butternut trees. They produce high quality, custom milled butternut veneer, plywood and lumber for builders and cabinetmakers.

Hiedi Mahoney runs Henry Design a woodworking /metal furniture business in Vergennes. She is a founding member of the Ferrisburgh artisan's guild and was the director and artist in residence.

Governor's Table Update
On September 9th, eleven WoodNet members participated in a design and planning meeting for the Governor's table project. The group decided to
pursue using the elm removed from the statehouse lawn for the tabletop, and other local woods for the legs. The top will be Vermont state shaped with
perhaps a live edge, folding edges, breadboard ends or inlays of significant state symbols to make it an unmistakably Vermont table.  James Burde and Bob Bouvier will meet with state representatives to discuss design ideas.
Contact Bob Bouvier at 863-5644 or wdubelieve@aol.com
